The Artistic Soul Studio, John Carpenter posters, and a future Film Festival!

I recently visited the new poster store, the Artistic Soul Studio.

It is located at 1014 E. 11th Street (and yes, you can park in front of the garage.)

Inside there are some great John Carpenter movie posters as part of the World Premiere John Carpenter Movie Poster Art Exhibit.

Some of the John Carpenter movie posters are for sale, and some are not.

Here are some photos of a few: (pardon the lights!)

I can remember when the Speculative Fiction Society at Western put on the very first John Carpenter Film Festival.

Bowling Green should do that again. John Carpenter is very famous and I think the event would be fabulous and fun.

We could have it at the Capitol Arts building or even SKyPAC. Do you agree? Let me know with a comment below.

Anyway, the tour of this cute gallery was fun. They have some great posters of all kinds there.

I wrote a Squidoo lens about John Carpenter called John Carpenter, Halloween, and Bowling Green, Kentucky - (there IS a connection!) You can find out more about him and about his films there.

And here is the link to this movie poster exhibit: (via the visitbgky site): World Premiere John Carpenter Movie Poster Art Exhibit.

Later!

Democratic Headquarters, Bowling Green, Kentucky

These photos are from a couple of weeks ago.

But we were pleased to see the Democratic Party Headquarters was up and running when we visited. It is located in the Hobby Lobby parking lot on Scottsville Road.

The back room has lots of space, and they have signs and bumper stickers to give out too, plus lots of information.

Here are just a few photos I took there:

I'm sure there is lots more set up there today. It's definitely worth a visit.

Walking in the Neighborhood... some surprises!

I went walking today in the Parkland Gardens neighborhood.

I like my neighborhood. It has many different kinds of houses in it, from the manicured to the rather scary. And across the street from Memphis Junction Road, there is a beautiful farm, complete with cows.

It is peaceful here and has lots of farm sounds, mostly mooing ones.

One house was already decorated for Halloween. I thought it was cute.

I took some photos today and will post them here. On the way home, someone drew up next to me in a car. She asked me if I were taking photos of houses for sale. I said no, because I was taking photos of lots of different things, the streets, the cows at the farm, AND some houses.

I did see one house for sale, and it looks very pretty.

Here are a few photos from today.

A cute tree decoration.

A summer trip to Jackson's Orchard near Bowling Green Kentucky, in 2012

Was this day ever hot!

I just finished putting some photos on Facebook of this too. Jackson's Orchard is on a hill and has a great view. You drive up a really big hill to get there. They have lots of apple trees and now peaches too.

I took pictures of part of the inside of the shop (that looks like a barn) and also of the family house, and the parking lot.

If you live in the area, you will want to go to Jackson's Orchard to get peaches, apples, apple and peach pies, and many kinds of canned goods and preserves. It's a fun trip. OH - and don't forget the slushies. Mmmmmm.... so frosty and cold.

It was funny to remember coming here years ago in our old car... it barely made it up the hill. Now we didn't worry. It was a really fun trip.

A trip to the Mellow Mushroom Restaurant in Bowling Green, Kentucky

Our trip to the Mellow Mushroom in Bowling Green, Kentucky

We went out to the new Mellow Mushroom restaurant near downtown at 1035 Chestnut Street last month and it was so fun. We sat inside and watched the staff open an umbrella outside.

There were many great choices on the menu. We wound up sharing a Mediterranean style pizza and it was great.

One thing I really thought was great. By mistake, our pizza got burned. SO... the manager came to our table and said we were getting another one made, and it was on them. How cool is that??

My daughter especially loved them tossing up the pizza crust.

I'll definitely be back. What a fun place. Here are a couple of photos of the outside and one of the inside:

Hanging out at the Pots Place and Fountain Square Park - April 2012

I hang out at the Pots Place often. I also love to take photos.

This day Bob was working on some face pots in the Pots Place studio.

I also went outside and took pictures of some buildings and cars around Fountain Square Park.

Here are  few photos from that day:

Hanging out at the Labold and Sons Salvage in Bowling Green, Kentucky

I finally made it to Labold and Sons Salvage in Bowling Green Kentucky. It is at the site of Spot Cash, which I had just started shopping at last year. They had some great socks there that Rickey liked. I enjoyed talking to the proprietor, who had some stories about years of working at the location.

I have been so curious to see this store for ages. I have heard only good things about it.

I took pictures outside the store. I had a lot of fun looking at all the items displayed there. I had to look slowly because each display is packed with things to look at.

They had all kinds of treasures there. Many were quaint and retro. I saw a wooden doll that looked like a sister to one my grandmother gave me once. They had lots of bicycles, rust and all. They had wicker chairs, scarves, pins, and some great pillow purses too.

I went downstairs too to see what was there. They had baskets, clothing, toys, more bikes, furniture, and birdcages, among many other items.

What I liked the most was the jewelry. I told myself I would come back with retro treasures packed in boxes to trade in two weeks.

Wish me luck! I will go through things and I know I can find some things to trade. I have always liked retro collectibles, so this will be fun.

Now, here are a few photos.
Open! More neat stuff is inside.

Love this street. The Pots Place is in the next block.

Cute table! It would look good in a display window...

You can find more photos of Labold and Sons Salvage here on Facebook.

 Tallyho!

Getting ready for summer! What a great Spring so far...

My biggest Fairy Door at the Pots Place.
Spring has arrived with a vengeance!

All of a sudden my yard here in South Central Kentucky was overgrown! But I found a great lawn person to come over and help out today.

He was very nice. I was impressed that he came over the same day I called.

Now to get my mowers ready for the summer.

And of course I will want to grow some more tomatoes. Maybe this will be the year I will actually can some veggies.

My wildlife sees some activity from my friendly mole (more rooms added to his warren) but I haven't seen my usual bunnies. 1-2 new squirrels have taken up residence in the willow tree. AND there are many birds visiting this year.

Also: is it just my imagination or have the bugs started being active pretty early?

I head downtown to the Pots Place tomorrow. I might bring my computer and catch up on work.

Oh! Check above for this week's activities around town in Bowing Green Kentucky too. Just click on the  page button at the top of this blog labeled "Bowling Green Kentucky Events Page" with date. It is right under the description of this blog.

Leave a comment. Are you excited about summer too?

Remembering Mom...

I have been remembering my Mom more this week, as I did last week.

Helen and Mom at the Pots Place

But I have not been writing about it (yet...)

Some things I remember about her were:

Her rolling off the couch onto the floor laughing at a funny Honeymooners TV episode... of course, we kids had to laugh with her! It's a good feeling to laugh so hard your sides ache.

Sharing coffee sometimes in the morning at her house... she had her coffee black, and I added milk and sweetener... we would talk over our plans for the day, and the week. It was a very relaxing and fun time for me.

Some things she said, like "remember the happy times..." when we talked about memories.

How she made homemade macaroni and cheese with a cracker crust... everyone's favorite! I think I will try that one of these days soon.

Singing in the car... her and we girls would sing songs and have the windows open sometimes when we were traveling to see relatives. It was fun to see the reactions of the people in nearby cars. Most smiled at us.

And how she made Christmas cookies and let us help her when we were little. My favorite cookies were the vanilla flavored, vanilla frosted cookies AND the fruit cookies with multi-colored fruit candy in them. Yum.

I am scanning photos again this week and should have a bunch linked to her sites eventually and on my Facebook page too.

There are many great memories I have of my Mom. I knew I could not have her with me forever... she was a beautiful person, an artist, and a friend.

I am starting some remembrance pages for my Mom, Mary Ellen Hooper Hirst, and finding out some stories about her I never would have known without them.

I miss you, Mom! I am listing her remembrance pages after this posting.

Your daughter
Betsy

What the Tech? About digital photography. A new WBKO series. #1 of 3

Pix from the MS Clipart Pages
Are you a photographer?

If you are, or want to be, I know you will like this - I did.

I saw it on the local TV news, and really liked it. I looked for it online afterwards for quite some time and could not find it.

Then voila! This morning there it as on my Yahoo local news links. This short program by Corey Fryia was really good.

I enjoyed learning more about my digital camera and what those pesky camera terms mean!

I'll definitely be using these hints and doing more experiments with my camera.

Here is the video link via YouTube:

I love the ending, from the old Batman TV show. Yeah, "same Bat-time..." It sure brought me back. Let me know how you like it too.

I will be putting Part Two and Part Three here soon hopefully. And here is the WBKO link, which features the same video: What the Tech: The Ins and Outs of Digital Cameras, Part One.

Bowling Green, Kentucky's Second Saturdays! Pix and notes from yesterday, 8-13-11

Some Second Saturday Photos - I took these yesterday during the Bowling Green Second Saturday Street Fair event. They are photos of Fountain Square Park and the Pots Place Studio and Gallery downtown, plus other downtown photos.

There were booths at the Second Saturday Street Fair, plus food, a kid's inflatable section, and more. The shops were part of the event too, of course.

At the Pots Place Co-op Studio and Gallery, we had some classes by Laura Bain-Selbo, and also demonstrations by Bob Brigl. Both are potters who are part of the Co-op.

We had such a fun day. We had lots of visitors.

Here are just a few of the photos I took yesterday. I have more on the Pots Place Facebook Page.

The Fountain Square Fountain.

A park statue and some booths.

Bob Brigl demonstrating.

One of Laura Bain-Selbo's classes.

Of course, it was also fun at the Square, and all the other shops too. Maybe next time I will take some time off and explore.

Later!

You can see more pictures of the Second Saturday event at the Second Saturday Photo Album on the Pots Place Co-op Studio and Gallery page.

Fun at the Pots Place today with Laura's class

The Pots Place had a class today...

It was taught by Laura Bain-Selbo. The time flew! It was fun to meet everyone, and I wound up going back to take some pictures too.

Here are a few of them from today:
Glazing a pot.

Working hard!

Stirring a glaze.

See more photos at the Pots Place Studio and Gallery Facebook page.

And here is their website.

It really was fun. I got to make some ultra-mini pots, and did some mini-mini Fairy Doors too. They were a lot harder to make than the bigger ones, but they were still fun to experiment with.

Onward and upward! I hope to take some more class pictures at the Pots Place PLUS one of opening the kiln soon.

Neat, huh? Comment below. Are you an artist? Do you like art? Share about it.

New baby birds are living on my outside buglight!

I did get some pictures this year. I do get bird nests at my house every year. But most of the time they choose bushes or trees.

Aren't they cute? They barely fit into the nest.

But the hiding pictures I like! It isn't easy to see this nest from the door.... was I ever surprised when this year the birds decided not to use the tree/bushes and thought the top of the light was perfect.

The baby birds did some great posing at first, sticking their necks out! Now the mama bird seems to be warning them to stay down and hide when I'm around with my camera. I hear her clucking at me from the willow tree.

Today I am thinking maybe the bush didn't look too secure when it had water coming up its trunk earlier. This bird nest looks like it too awhile to build. I have some other birds to get out of part of my garage this summer, of course after the baby birds have flown away.
