Don't you just love curling up with a fun catalog now and then? I do.
Then sometimes I keep it for a while, and sometimes I recycle it by cutting off the label and sending it on to another reader at a thrift store, or letting a friend or family member have it.
Here is one of my favorite catalogs:
The Vermont Country Store - - here are wonderful old-fashioned gadgets, tableclothes, gifts, soaps, and even a shampoo called Gee Your Hair Smells Terrific that I remember from girlhood. (And it did smell terrific). It's all the kind of stuff you might have found at that old-fashioned country store you used to see in the summertime or at the dime store in your neighborhood, if you were lucky.
Their online catalog is here:
http://www.VermontCountryStore.com.
This store is a family business, owned by the Orton family. You can find out more at their Business pages.

Horse Cave photos
I was going through my photos today. I will need to post these again later on. They did not keep this building, though I wish they had. Somebody was talking about renovating it, and even may have started on the roof. But it was too far gone, or expensive, and this was caused by a fire.
I do have some more photos here: Horse Cave photo set. I am looking for the originals. (I played with some in Photoshop...)

It's almost Fall....
Fall starts tomorrow.
Ack! I can't believe summer is almost over already!! As usual, my garden dreams were just that... but next year I plan to really improve my garden (i.e. do more than mow on it...)
I found this cute photo on Morguefile. It is one of my favorite art sites. I have some personal photos to put online soon too. Can't wait.
Well, that is it for now.
I plan to enjoy the last of the summer weather for the next few weeks... or as long as it lasts.
Looks like it will last at LEAST a week.

Too Much Stuff!
Tweet about this posting:
I also like older books and the beautiful illustrations that can accompany them.
I was on Ebay for awhile and tried selling things like vintage jewelry and, of course, BOOKS.
So now I am paring down. One of my favorite websites, the FlyLady pages, is helping me organize through the use of the 17-fling Boogie and daily check lists that are free and sent to my email address.
It took awhile to get all this stuff, so it is going to take awhile to get rid of it.
Notes will go on to the computer, and letters and business stuff into folders. Everything else will be filed, unless it goes to the shredder.
It will be nice to have an entire kitchen table again, along with an extra chair in the living room and one less big computer I don't use.

Do YOU have too much stuff, too?
Most of my extra "stuff" is paperwork AND books. I have enough books to stock a small store. One of my favorite things is reading.I also like older books and the beautiful illustrations that can accompany them.

A quick posting... about backing up my computer, and photos
Image via WikipediaI just finished backing up my computer to MyOtherDrive.com. It does give me a good feeling to do that.
It has been on my list to do for a couple of weeks.
I have lost data off of my hard drives twice. Hopefully it won't happen anymore. Next stop: a portable hard drive that I will keep near my computer.
The time I spend writing I definitely don't want to lose - plus, neat websites and links are things I want to keep to explore later.
And pictures?? Don't even go there! I am super-lucky that I had many photos on Flickr and Photobucket. They are not replaceable. Period.
People say in a house fire they most miss their photos and little mementoes. So to keep the first, one of my projects is to scan old photos and put them online in a backup - - just in case.
Are your files and photos protected? Just saying.

What was your worst programming, web design or design mistake ever?
I went to @ManageFlitter's Twitter page today, and found an interesting-looking link. It took me to a Smashing Magazine article called: What is the Worst Design or Programming mistake you've ever made?
What a great question. Well, not the question exactly, but the answers.
Eureka - - I read some personal stories about actual incidents from real people. It was fun.
Plus, it was so good to realize that that I am not the only occasional mess-up out there who has done something really bad to a website or job. It is part of the normal learning process when you teach yourself.
I do know that a person working on a site or blog can have something terribly wrong happen due to working too fast or not being careful. And if you have not done a lot of file transfers before, you are probably going to make some missteps.
Some people (like me) just have to learn the hard way.
You know what they say, as you learn from your mistakes, they are all good. At least I like to believe that.
This article was so enjoyable. Here are some mistake stories taken from the article:
1. Somebody uploaded a new webpage over the "old" one only to realize that the old one was at least functional. The "new" one was broken and there was not a backup. Oops.
2. Another designer ordered business cards. They probably looked great BUT they were supposed to fit into a lanyard. They didn't.
3. Somebody sent off an "e-blast" way too soon.
And here is another story from the article:
“Sent PDF to the printing house for 1000 leaflets. Received them and realized that the phone number was wrong. Then, sent corrected PDF, received leaflets and realized that the wrong PDF was sent. We had 1000 useless leaflets with the right number but with the ‘iStockphoto’ watermark on every (lo-res) picture. Third time it was OK.”
If you are like me, and have done things like written over index.html and other files when they weren't from the same site (yup....) or had your hard drive crash with no backup, well, these stories will definitely make you feel better about yourself.
Not backing up your online work and then losing it is something many people talk about here. I have had my computer crash twice. I lost my data completely. Once I had only a minimal backup, and once with only half my files backed up. Augh!
So.... if you are like me and have had made some mistakes while learning online or offline design, I think that this article might just make your day.
Here is that Article again - enjoy! What is the Worst Design or Programming Mistake You've Ever Made?

Are you on Twitter and Facebook yet?
Image via Wikipedia Twitter and Facebook - why I like them.
Yup... I'm posting about Twitter and Facebook again. I like them!
Here are my reasons why:
#1. I have connected and reconnected with many people,
#2. It is fun to share my web discoveries with others,
#3. I learn about current events faster than I ever did before,
#4. I can share photos with friends and family, and
#5. I can learn about things I am interested in on both sites.
Before I was on Twitter and Facebook, I was a blogger. That was fun, but mostly one-sided, because I had to wait for comments before I could find out what others thought, or what websites they liked.
Now I can read the thoughts of others, see what is important to them, keep in touch better, and learn about the internet, my hobbies, the current news around the world, and more.
The downside to both of these sites are spam, hackers, and privacy issues. But these issues are the same for just using a computer and being on the internet. Of course, it is always good to be vigilant, to practice safe surfing, know who your friends are and what to say on the internet, etc. etc. but these things are also true for everyday computer use.
Do you agree? Do you like being on Facebook and Twitter? Or are you content to surf the "regular" way on your computer?
Or perhaps you don't own a computer and go to the library every now and then?
Comment below and let me know what you think.

My To-Do List and the Flylady Site - baby steps...
It is official. There is not enough room on an standard 8 1/2 x 11 sheet to put my entire to-do list on it.
So I have decided to take baby steps and try to still DO my to-do stuff, but have realized that perhaps it will not get done in one day, or even one week.
I will prioritize as I go, and not obsess about it as much.
Today, I will not start writing it here... but I am guessing that my readers also probably have a to-do list longer than their arm too. I can share that my list does include repair work, snail mail letters, and book organization. (I have a LOT of books...) But mostly it is the "stuff" that gets in my way. I have altogether too much stuff, a la packrat style. And now I want to simplify. And that means the stuff has to go.
I have found a great website to help me with my to-do list, and all my "stuff" that must be sold, organized, or donated. It is the Flylady Site. If you have a to-do list that includes a LOT of stuff in your house that needs attention, moving, selling, donating, etc. then you will really like it.
It is a free site. They do sell some cleaning aids but you don't have to buy them to get value from this site. You can set it up so that you get an inspiring email in your mailbox every day too.
Here is that link again:

I'm off to shine my sink.
Leave a comment, won't you? I would love it.

Wow - it's time to learn how to post videos on YouTube!
I mean, wow. People are really starting to make big money on YouTube! All you need are popular videos. YouTube shares half the ad income with their partners, which you would be with funny or popular videos there at the YouTube site.
I just read a story online at the Yahoo Finance site about the 10 YouTube personalities that are making 100,000 or more per year there. The story was called "Meet the YouTube Stars Making $100,000 a Year or More." I mean, one hundred THOUSAND dollars or more! That's a LOT. I was impressed. Now I want to learn how to make a good video.
Here are the 10 people plus links to their videos. You can see an example of each kind of video by clicking on their names. I decided to check them out so I can see what people are clicking on there at YouTube.
#1:Shane Dawson - he's got some funny jokes, plays lots of different characters, loves TV spoofs, costumes, makeup and has T-shirts and more. The video here is selected from just one of his THREE channels. I checked to see if his second channel had different stuff on it, but the one I saw was the same as the first channel. I have not seen his third channel yet.
#2 The Annoying Orange - yup, the orange IS annoying. Remember how funny it was watching your friends talk upside down? You know how weird the teeth used to look? Well, the Annoying Orange has people teeth and eyes. Look for other fruit in the skits too. He likes to say "Hey" a lot. It's pretty cute.
#3 Philip DeFranco - today I watched Phili DeFranco's Sub Saturday Show. He selected three different people that he likes on YouTube that others can like. I did think his selections were funny. I may come back here again.
#4 Ryan Higa - this YouTube star is famous for his "How to be a Gangster" and "How to be Ninja" videos, according to the Yahoo article. I chose "How to be a Gangster". It is cute! Click on the name to go to it. I was curious to see it, and didn't want to have to listen to two of these. But maybe someday...
#5. Fred - Okay. I went to the very first episode here. Fred tries to be nice and give his neighbors a May Day Basket. Or something. I love the running part. Fred is a little kid who talks in a really high voice. I liked it!
#6. Shay Carl - I picked Shay Carl's latest video. He is getting interviewed by a TV station. Then he shows Vidcon, the world's largest video convention. He gets interviewed on stage here. They ask what it feels like to do so well with his YouTube videos. He says it's a lot the same; he still does the work and reads what people say so that he finds out if people hate him or not.
There are also some bands that play on stage, and clips from interviews and crowds at the convention. At the end of the video, they give kalebnation.com, and allcapsband.com a word shout out.
#7. Mediocre Films - they show an ad on this one, which I didn't like. The others were ad-free. I bet they make money from it. Also, there is a notice that crackle.com may collect information from you when you watch. The show I picked to see is called Officer Pig. Here is a description from the video: "They are two guinea pigs in a Winnebago and they aren't going back. Pee Pee and Buttercup get pulled over by the Man on the roadtrip, sending Pee Pee over the edge." One thing I didn't expect to see was the Sony Pictures logo and music at the end. But the video did make me smile.
#8. Smosh - Smosh became famous for their Pokemon Theme Music video, which I can't post, because it was taken off. Darn. So I picked Ian Gets Lucky. It's all about the invention of a new iPod app. I won't give it away. It's a good story though. Funny!
#9. The Young Turks - this is the only one I had heard of before today. I have listened to them on headphones after downloading one or two radio (online) episodes. There is another commercial here. (yuck). This is a talking head show. They go over today's stories like a TV news show does - this episode is about the Democrats, Dr. Laura, Social Security, and more. The MSNBC logo is at the top right - I wonder if the Young Turks are on that channel too. I watched only the first part of this show, which is a long one.
#10. Natalie Tran - I picked the latest Community Channel posting - about personal journals. This shows Natalie and two other Natalie characters talking about their writers and what they think about them. Natalie has been picked on two blogs as the Blog Picture to head up the articles. She is not first in the list, but is probably getting a lot more hits lately. She lives in Australia and her video channel is called Community Channel. I love that Australian accent she has. I think she is pretty funny. She plays her own other characters too, PLUS she posts some of her comments that are pretty off-base, which of course makes them funny.
I want to do a YouTube show now! I just talked about this with my daughter to come up with ideas. Be looking for it next Spring. First I have to learn how to shoot a good video. I already know how to do a funny act - - I used to practice every summer. It will be fun, fun, FUN.
