About Burning Man – what is it?
It's a yearly celebration. I'd call it a “be-in” - - but if you weren't born yet when be-ins were happening, you won't know what that means. So I'd say it's a chance to get together, show artwork, be yourself, and experience a unique community and live events. Every year, I look through the photos and read about events at Burning Man and vow someday to attend. This year, I hope some people read this blog and discover the event and go to it also. If you do, email me and let me know how it was and how you liked it!
The Burning Man Celebration takes place in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. This year the dates it will be held are August 31st through September 2nd. It has become more popular every year it has existed. According to the site, more than 48,000 people now attend.
It has a different theme every year. This year's (2009) art theme is Evolution. The photos on the websites show great vehicles, art exhibits, costumes, fireworks, light shows, and much more.
Burning Man culminates with a spectacular effigy burning. People bring their own shelters, which can range from simple tents to state-of-the-art buildings. They break down camp and restore the site to a pristine state afterwards.
