Okay. Time to get planning again.
The weather here in Kentucky has been just plain nuts. First one week in the 60's and 70's, and then back down to the 30's. But this tells me that it's time to plant, because Spring here is like that.
One of my Aunts said to plant strawberries and blackberries this year. My husband immediately thought of B'rer Rabbit and a large thicket where the blackberry bushes are going to be. He said "You know, I used to pick blackberries when I was younger". It was a good memory for him.
He told me birds used to nest in those blackberry bushes. He was living in Alabama then.
I said I thought I'd put netting over them so I wouldn't be sharing so much with those birds.
But I said that would be great in a way to have prickley bushes in the yard, because the bushes could be sort of a fence and keep dogs and intruders out. I wonder.
So anyway... now I get out the garden books and the magazines again. Here is what I have this year:
The Seedsaver's Catalog
Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds
and to help out, The 2009 Old Farmer's Almanac (Southern Edition) for 2009 and the 2009 Blum's Farmer's and Planter's Almanac. I wanted to see which was best. So far I like the Old Farmer's Almanac, but maybe because I am used to it.
We'll see what they have. It will be my reward tonight to look in there after everything else is done.
